Interesting Information About St. Johns
St. Johns and Clinton County -- St. Johns is known as the "Hub of Michigan" because it is 30 miles away from the center of the state. The County is named after a former Governor of New York name De Witt Clinton and De Witt is another city in Clinton County that borders St. Johns. The county is well known for its peppermint and spearmint crop. St. Johns hold the Annual Mint Festival every August to celebrate that recognition, which brings nearly 70,000 people to the city.
St. Johns History -- St. Johns was established in 1856. Other names considered for the city were Johnsonville, Swegelsville and Meadville. The village of St. Johns was incorporated in 1857. Shortly after, in 1860, it became the Clinton County seat. At the same time, the Clinton County Newspaper, then called the Clinton Republican, relocated to St. Johns. Also at about the same time, a business district developed along Clinton Avenue, which remains the main thoroughfare for the downtown business district. St. Johns business continues to flourish with the location of a Wal-Mart Supercenter, followed by several other establishments in the surrounding area including Southpoint Mall and Southgate Shopping Center.
