          Interesting Information About Lansing

/files/Images/Lansing History.jpeg
Lansing History -- Lansing was chosen as Michigan’s Capital City because of its central location. Its beautiful capital, built in 1879 and restored between 1989 and 1992 makes it a must see destination for visitors. Lansing is also known as the Car Capital of North America and is the birthplace of Oldsmobile founded in 1897. Today, more cars are produced in Lansing (over 400,000 each year) than any other city on the continent. Since 1847 Lansing has been home to Michigan's state government. In 1879 the state completed and dedicated its present Capitol, designed by Elijah E. Myers. The Renaissance Revival-inspired statehouse is still the most distinctive attraction of Lansing's downtown area.

-- While in Lansing, be sure to take a tour of its Capitol Building. The Capitol has been beautifully restored, so the tour is visually and educationally stimulating. The library of Michigan is open to the public with its 27 miles of shelving, including one of the ten largest genealogical collections in the United States, a unique Michigan Collection and legal materials dating back centuries among many more interesting materials. The Michigan Historical Museum is a sight to see! Unique exhibits walk visitors through such pieces of prominent Michigan history as the 1957 Detroit Auto Show and the Upper Peninsula Copper Mine. Downtown Lansing also has several shops and eateries.
