          Interesting Information About Bangor

Bangor Depot -- Thanks to a great amount of private investment from Ken Ratzlaff and his Beacon Specialized Living Services corporation, the Bangor Downtown Development Authority, and the State of Michigan CDBG and MDOT grants, the Bangor station has new life. This after a period of neglect that almost saw the building razed by its owner, CSX Transportation. Thanks to a seed grant, the City, State grants and private investment the building is no longer an eyesore but rather has become a centerpiece of the City’s revitalization.  

Bangor History -- The City of Bangor was first a part of Bangor Township. Then it became the Village of Bangor and then later the City of Bangor. Mr. Charles U. Cross first came to Bangor from Madison County, New York in 1834. Within a year, he built his Old Mill and Pond first home on the site that is now West Michigan Savings Bank. Others joined him as the lands offered good farming and the river made lumbering easy. 18 years later, 1853, the area still had less than 100 residents. October 9, 1853. The Van Buren County Board of Supervisors voted to organize the township and give it the name of Marion. The name was so unpopular, that residents voted to change it to Bangor only five days later. The name Bangor was chosen because one of the members of the board of supervisors was from Bangor, Maine. Bangor became a village on March 21, 1877 and remained a village for 91 years until February 5, 1968, when it became a City.
